The Greater The Risk

There's a lot to like about pop-punkers The Greater The Risk. Hailing from Richmond VA the quintet consists of drummer David, bassist Nate, lead vocalist Deek and guitarists Blake and Ashley. Firstly, as a female in this industry, I like that they have a girl guitarist, keeping those boys in line and proving the fairer sex can be more than just fan-girls.

Another thing to like about this bunch is that they spent several months compiling songs for the EP, roping in Rich Stine (Fighting Gravity) and Jamie King (Between The Buried and Me, A Skylit Drive) to record, mix and master their work. As a result, their debut self-titled EP was released last month.

Lastly - and most importantly - is their sound. It's catchy, it'll make your foot tap and it'll leave you curious for more. Although only being a band less than a year, the time they dedicated to writing and recording has made them sound like a seasoned band that will sit effortlessly next to the likes of Boys Like Girls and Cartel on your MP3 players. Just remember when they make the big time, that you heard about them here first!

Guitarist Ashley anchors the band as it's only female influence and founding member talks to Kiki Vs Everyone about the band.

The Last Days of Empire

Straight outta NJ, The Last Days of Empire release their newest album 'The Veronica Project' and put simply: it's fantastic. It's bands like this that make this blog worthwhile.

Passionate vocals and top notch musicianship make 'The Veronica Project' a superb listen. Reminiscent of the wonderful Boy Night Out's 'Trainwreck', the album opens with a spoken word intro. It sets the scene for the journey of the album, painting the picture of a post-apocalyptic world and puts you in story time mode, just before the first song, '39 Sniper' roundhouse kicks you in the face.

Don't be put off by the phrase concept album being banded about when describing this CD, it's listener friendly and each song easily listenable in isolation from one another. Stand out tracks are 'Prizefighter' which progressively builds in emotion culminating in a screaming refrain and 'The Faceless'. Others have compared Last Days of Empire to 30 Seconds to Mars (again don't let that out you off!!) and I fully expect them to climb to the same dizzy heights of their game.

Forever Came Calling

Trusty Wikipedia describes Twentynine Palms, California as "a city in a desert and mountain area" and is home to the world's largest Marines base... apparently. It's also home to Forever Came Calling, a pop-punk threepiece. Bassist, John, explains "We come from a place where there's not a lot to do. You either play music with friends, join the marines, or do drugs. We choose music." So, in 2006 the band were formed and thus the Twentynine Palms' music scene was born.

More Love Automatic!

I recently raved about New Jersey's Love Automatic and their fantastic free E.P 'Dance Floor Disaster'. Now there's even more good news! The boys have just released a new song called 'Fight Alone' on their Pure Volume page and again are giving it away! Which brings the total of free songs on their page to a massive twelve! Certainly worth checking out. You can't go wrong with free music, especially if it's in the form of Love Automatic!

Bigger & Better Things

If catchy and fun is what they aim for, then Bigger & Better Things have achieved their first goal.
The Montréal four-piece encapsulate youthful energy and ambition to a T. Imagine the musical love child of The Academy Is... and All Time Low being raised by a poetic uncle and that's pretty much who Bigger & Better Things are! Logan (guitar/piano) describes the band's sound akin to a darker version of the shiny pop punk that everyone's so used to these days. "Picture the way a post-hardcore song would play out," he says, "but the music isn't dark and scary. And whenever we play something 'dark and scary', it doesn't sound like a hardcore song." The gritty 'Looting The Church' is a prime example of that edge.

After being a band for almost 3 years and a shifting line up, the band currently consists of Luc (guitar/vocals/piano), Mike (lead vocals), Matt (drums) & Logan. They have an opening for a bassist after Tristan left on friendly terms to pursue other commitments, but Logan says that he “still lends over some performing/recording duties whenever we call on him for a favor. He also comes up with good bass ideas and we'll ask him to contribute to a new song whenever he can”.

The boys have no plans to tour as yet, but are hoping to do a few outdoor shows around their native Montreal so if you're lucky enough to live in the area be sure to go and support them. Although the band are currently unsigned, i'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone snaps them up. Download 'Market the Fun I Have' from their Purevolume page and check out their new EP 'You Wouldn't Get It' (available through iTunes ) completely funded by the band themselves.

I had the chance to find out more about the band from the lovely Logan:

How would you describe Bigger & Better Things to people who haven't heard you?
I'd say it's like classic pop-punk but on progressive, expressive level. Some say it's like the thoughtful strangeness of Say Anything but the feeling of All Time Low meets The Maine.

Who were the bands/artists/influences that made you want to be in a band?
The bands that have had the biggest impacts on us would have to be Taking Back Sunday, Fall out Boy, The Starting Line, Four Year Strong. For me, personally, I think it was Limp Bizkit, NOFX and Blink-182 that made me really want to start a band.

Where do you guys hope to be in 5 years time?
I hope to be at the peak of our career: 3 albums in, a couple of world tours under our belts and a trillion scars and stories. A couple of bucks in pockets wouldn't be too bad, either.

If you could tour with any band(s) who would they be and why?
I think it would have to be Lil' Wayne and Every Time I Die. They seem like they know how to have a good time on and off the stage. Maybe Paramore too.

Best/Worst things about being in your band? The best thing about being in Bigger and Better Things is knowing we have a key to opening a magical door. We make good music and knowing we're only getting better is constantly exciting. The worst part of Bigger and Better Things would have to be the general difficulties any unsigned band faces: constant work, high stress, high pressure, conflicts. I secretly find all those things exciting too aha.

Have you got any plans for upcoming tours/releases that we should know about?
We're heading into the studio on Monday to record a brand new song. We're going to be putting it on our Myspace page in early July.

You Wouldn't Get It is out now on iTunes

Love Automatic

Everyone loves to get something for free, right? Especially if it's music. So if you like your rock infused with pop and a generous helping of electronica & trance then check out New Jersey's Love Automatic.

Their free e.p. 'Dance Floor Disaster' is available to download at their Myspace and PureVolume sites and comes packed with five tracks of delectable bouncy pop punk appealing to almost any musical palate. Title track, 'Dance Floor Disaster', is sprinkled with clever sing-along lyrics and a catchy riff that is enough to make even the most stalwart non-dancers want to tap their feet and nod their heads; while 'One Foot Short''s vengeful lyrics mixed with sugary rock gives the e.p. it's broad appeal, offering something for everyone.

New track, Can't Stop (available for free download too) which gave Love Automatic the number one PureVolume spot and a feature (Feb 28-Mar 03, 2010) and edges towards a more explicitly trance sound which I defy you to not shimmy along to. Trust me, this band will be the sound of your summer - over 40,000 people can't be wrong.
