Hitting up BBC Radio One's Live Lounge with expectation weighing heavy on their shoulders, 30 Seconds to Mars needed to trump their last Lounge visit which saw them win the best performance with a cover of Kanye West's 'Stronger'. Jared takes liberty with the lyrics altering "I want your everything as long as it's free" to "I want you open mouthed and on your knees". Gaga would be proud. Hormonal young ladies' hearts everywhere skipped a beat.
But is a crude lyric change here and there enough to win this match up?
If take Jared Leto's interesting choice of granny-head wear (Gaga, again, would be proud) out of the equation you're left with an adaptation that is decidedly dark and borders on creepy - pretty standard for this threesome - that leaves you feeling more scared than serenaded.
Verdict: Bad
In contrast, Hayley Williams' stunning simplicity shone through in a stripped down piano version posted on Twitter - No lyric changes or bizarre fashions needed. It sometimes seems everything she touches turns to gold, and it's refreshing to see a strong talented woman in this business.
It would be great to hear a complete version of this sometime in the future as in it's current state it's over all too quickly. As it stands her shortened rendition is flawless, raw and leaves you begging for more - exactly the original intention of the song.
Verdict:
Congrats Hayley! You unquestionably win the second title in the Vs Series with your wonderfully unpretentious version!
