The Hitchcocks

Introducing Danish foursome, The Hitchcocks. Combining their passion for horror movies and good old fashioned punk rock The Hitchcocks have been making waves across on the continent for the past four years. If your like your tunes sing-along and crammed with anthemic attitude with a healthy helping of horror-inspired lyrical content then this is undoubtedly the band for you. The latest record, 'Blood Will Follow', is out now on 12" and mp3 complete with fantastic artwork and is bursting at the seams with 14 cracking tracks reminiscent of Rancid and The Misfits.

Check out what drummer, Thomas, had to say to us when we caught up with him:

Firstly, for those new to the band, how did The Hitchcocks come about?
We've all been in quite a few different bands and some of us have others bands now as well. The Hitchcocks started out with Kasper and our previous bass player Frederik wanting to merge rockabilly and punkrock. A few weeks later they asked me if I wanted to play drums even though I'm not a drummer by default (I knew how to play, just not very well). We rehearsed a few times and it soon became evident that we needed a second guitarist, so a guy named Anders was brought in to fill that spot. Anders was forced to quit due to some severe issue with his ears, so Mads joined the band as our lead guitarist. We spent some time trying to find our niche, but we started leaning more and more towards 'traditional' punkrock but with a slightly more streetpunk/horror flavor.

What is it about the horror genre that you guys love?
It's hard to pin-point really, but I think it's safe to say we all like watching horror movies and we all feel drawn towards the horror universe, and it doesn't normally take too much effort writing a song about some horror related nonsense.

If you were to have a horror movie night what films would you show?
Tough one! Personally I'm into corny horror flicks with hot chicks and no particular plot! To name a few favorites: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, The Devil's Rejects, 28 Days Later, REC, Paranormal Activity, Drag Me To Hell, Cloverfield, Army Of Darkness, Evil Dead, the Alien series, The Strangers, and a buttload of horror movies from the 50/60/70/80's.

What about your favourite Hitchcock movie?
Rear Window, though Psycho ranks up there too!

Is it true you used to have a double bass as part of your instrumentation? What happened to this?
Yeah, our first bass player Frederik played double bass. We used to start out as a rockabilly/punkrock trio and as we moved towards being just a pure punkrock band, Frederik lost interest and decided it was time for him to try something else. The fact that he had become a dad and had other obligations wasn't exacly a motivating fact for him either I think. There wasn't any drama, it was just part of a natural process and we still remain good friends. It was a no-brainer that we opted for an electric bass after Frederik had quit. We gave the nod to Kaspar and he fit the bill well.

What bands do you take inspiration from?
As for me personally, I'm into all kinds of genres, ranging from punk, metal, hardrock, hardcore, to rock 'n' roll, country, classic rock, 80's glam rock, acoustic, pop etc. I take my inspiration from whatever I currently listen to that I like. As for the whole band, we obviously all listen to punkrock of course, but we're not limited to any genre. But since you asked about specific bands, I should mention The Ramones, Misfits, Teenage Bottlerocket, Bad Religion, Groovie Ghoulies, Lillingtons, Social Distortion, Teen Idols, etc.

How hard do you think it is for a punk rock bands from mainland Europe to get attention in Britain and the US?
Oh, It's VERY difficult. There's so much that comes down to pure luck and having the right connections. There's a ton of really good punk bands from Europe that never gets noticed in the US and Britain. Being a punkrock band from little ol' Denmark doesn't exactly do you any favors either.

Are there any plans to come play some shows in Britain soon?
I hope so, but we don't have any exact plans. We have a few shows scattered around Europe (mostly Denmark) for the remaining part of the year, and hopefully we'll be going on a European tour some time early next year, and if Britain is included I can't really say yet, but let's hope so! It would be our first time over there as a band and the first time for me personally, so that'd be cool!
