Wolves At Heart

Hot on the heels of yesterday's Brit-pop-punk feature on Maycomb, today we're here to talk about Wolves at Heart. They're Scotland's premier pop punkers and are about to play with their idols, Senses Fail, in Glasgow tomorrow and the day after with New Yorkers Such Gold.

Aside from having the honour of being our first Scottish band to have a feature, the boys have also been making a name for themselves within the scene through their pay-what-you-want record, Be Your Own Best Friend, as well as opening up for bands like Transit, Man Overboard and I Call Fives.

Their sound is reminiscent of mid 90s Blink (think Cheshire Cat...) with swathes of classic Drive-Thru bands (such as Allister and Home Grown) thrown in for good measure, whilst their lambaste lyrics match up to the likes of Hit The Lights with songs like 'You Can't Buy A Backbone' and 'Sorry Excuse for a Scene'.

Kiki Vs Everyone had a cheeky little word with Shug (drums) and Keir (guitars/vocals) about what it's like over the border and their upcoming Senses Fail show...

Who are you?
Keir: I play guitar and sing.
Shug: I am Matthew McDaid and I play the skin flute.
Keir: Wolves At Heart are a four piece pop punk band from Glasgow. If Criterion ever make a Burnout game as good as Burnout 3, we want to be on the soundtrack. We started playing together in high school. Just covers of Yellowcard songs and Senses Fail stuff, and playing lunch time gigs at our school. We only started playing our own songs and gigging around Glasgow in about 2008. There’s a pretty strong group of people who listen to pop punk/hardcore stuff up here, but not too many bands playing that kind of stuff in Scotland, so people were really enthusiastic about what we were doing. We put out a demo of songs that year, then last year self released our first EP, ‘Be Your Own Best Friend’ which we made a short DIY physical run of, as well as on Bandcamp and iTunes. The last year has been pretty crazy for us. We’ve had the opportunity to play with so many great bands like Man Overboard, Transit and I Call Fives, as well as meet loads of great bands from around the UK like Maycomb and Tell It To The Marines. We’re working on finishing a new EP right now which should be out in the next few months. We’re really excited for everyone to hear the new songs. It’s a definite step up.

What's been your career highlight so far?
Keir: For me it would be being included on the Man Overboard/Transit show here in Glasgow in December there. Those two bands wrote two of my favourite records last year and to get to play on the same show as them is amazing
Shug: Being able to play the same gig as Senses Fail is a huge deal for me. Even though our music may sound far removed from Senses Fail’s, when we were all younger and just starting to play our instruments they were a huge influence on us. We would go and see them play and we used to say to each other “Imagine one day we got to support Senses Fail. That would be amazing”. Also playing in Wolves At Heart put me in the position to be offered many modelling jobs and I recently beat Brad Pitt to ‘sexiest man alive’, that’s pretty cool.

If you could be in any band which one would it be?
Keir: Probably Saves The Day or Brand New. I sometimes think it would be nice to be just a guitarist, and have someone else be the frontman, and as far as song writers go Chris Conley and Jesse Lacey are pretty unparalled.
Matt: Foo Fighters. I love Dave Grohl.

What's the Scottish scene like?
Keir: We’ve played Glasgow a lot, so I’m looking forward to playing other cities in Scotland later this year. There’s only so many times you can play your own city when you’re a small band.
Shug: it’s like RAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIN!
Keir: We’re pretty much one of only a handful of bands who play this kind of music around here. It would be cool if there was more of a community of bands but I guess it’s nice to stand out. It can be frustrating when some people have this assumption that pop punk music isn’t credible. We try to ignore those people.
Overall we are really excited with everything we are doing. We’re playing with Senses Fail/Man Overboard on Feb 22nd, then the very next night playing with Such Gold and Starters, so things are going really well for us at the moment, and our new EP is really close to being finished.
Our last EP is up for ‘pay what you want’, or even just an email address, over on our bandcamp. Come stalk us on all the usual facebook, twitter, tumblr, and a big thanks to all our friends that support us and everyone who has ever given our music a listen or came to a show so far.

How did you manage to get on the Senses fail show?
Keir: Enthusiasm? Essentially I heard that Senses Fail were coming back to the UK and tracked down the Glasgow promoter within about 5 minutes of knowing that. He knew who we were and agreed we’d be a good fit for the show. It came about pretty fast
Shug: Prostitution

Why should people get there early and watch Wolves at Heart?
Keir: Cause until we release the next EP it’s the only way to hear our new songs.
Shug: People should arrive in time for our set because we are going to take over the world and will remember everyone who has wronged us.

Check out Wolves at Heart tomorrow (22 Feb 2011) in Glasgow with Senses Fail and Man Overboard.

Internet-wise, head over to their Bandcamp to grab their toe-tapping EP Be Your Own Best Friend, or their Tumblr or Twitter for more information.
