If catchy and fun is what they aim for, then Bigger & Better Things have achieved their first goal.
The Montréal four-piece encapsulate youthful energy and ambition to a T. Imagine the musical love child of The Academy Is... and All Time Low being raised by a poetic uncle and that's pretty much who Bigger & Better Things are! Logan (guitar/piano) describes the band's sound akin to a darker version of the shiny pop punk that everyone's so used to these days. "Picture the way a post-hardcore song would play out," he says, "but the music isn't dark and scary. And whenever we play something 'dark and scary', it doesn't sound like a hardcore song." The gritty 'Looting The Church' is a prime example of that edge.
After being a band for almost 3 years and a shifting line up, the band currently consists of Luc (guitar/vocals/piano), Mike (lead vocals), Matt (drums) & Logan. They have an opening for a bassist after Tristan left on friendly terms to pursue other commitments, but Logan says that he “still lends over some performing/recording duties whenever we call on him for a favor. He also comes up with good bass ideas and we'll ask him to contribute to a new song whenever he can”.
The boys have no plans to tour as yet, but are hoping to do a few outdoor shows around their native Montreal so if you're lucky enough to live in the area be sure to go and support them. Although the band are currently unsigned, i'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone snaps them up. Download 'Market the Fun I Have' from their Purevolume page and check out their new EP 'You Wouldn't Get It' (available through iTunes ) completely funded by the band themselves.
I had the chance to find out more about the band from the lovely Logan:
How would you describe Bigger & Better Things to people who haven't heard you?
I'd say it's like classic pop-punk but on progressive, expressive level. Some say it's like the thoughtful strangeness of Say Anything but the feeling of All Time Low meets The Maine.
Who were the bands/artists/influences that made you want to be in a band?
The bands that have had the biggest impacts on us would have to be Taking Back Sunday, Fall out Boy, The Starting Line, Four Year Strong. For me, personally, I think it was Limp Bizkit, NOFX and Blink-182 that made me really want to start a band.
Where do you guys hope to be in 5 years time?
I hope to be at the peak of our career: 3 albums in, a couple of world tours under our belts and a trillion scars and stories. A couple of bucks in pockets wouldn't be too bad, either.
If you could tour with any band(s) who would they be and why?
I think it would have to be Lil' Wayne and Every Time I Die. They seem like they know how to have a good time on and off the stage. Maybe Paramore too.
Best/Worst things about being in your band? The best thing about being in Bigger and Better Things is knowing we have a key to opening a magical door. We make good music and knowing we're only getting better is constantly exciting. The worst part of Bigger and Better Things would have to be the general difficulties any unsigned band faces: constant work, high stress, high pressure, conflicts. I secretly find all those things exciting too aha.
Have you got any plans for upcoming tours/releases that we should know about?
We're heading into the studio on Monday to record a brand new song. We're going to be putting it on our Myspace page in early July. You Wouldn't Get It is out now on iTunes
Go befriend them on Myspace
