[spunge] @ Southampton Joiners 27.11.10

There's nothing better than a splash of happy-go-lucky ska to warm you up on an icy November evening. Saturday's gig at Southampton Joiners was host to no less than four support bands, including local favourites Mash Attack and Mouthwash fresh from supporting Less Than Jake. Despite the late stage time for headliners [spunge] - gone 11pm - the place was still packed out and the atmosphere upbeat.

I always see [spunge] and come away astounded at just what a diverse fanbase they have. Not only is it the mid-twenties like myself, reminiscing about the good old days when everyone was in a ska band. It's the teenagers of today, as well as the band's peers who rock up to the shows and skank the night away. Forking out often over a tenner for a ticket to see a band who've not put a record out for 3 years speaks volumes for the strength of their back catalogue and fun of their live performance.

This time around saw the debut of an as-yet-untitled killer new song which went down a treat. Word on the street is they have a few more new tracks up their sleeves so keep checking back for more information on a new wave of classics-in-the-making from [spunge].

You gotta hand it to the boys, despite having been around the block a bunch of times they can still pack out a venue and get everyone dancing. Whirling through a tried and tested set of classics like Ego, Jump and Change of Scene, it's hard to not have a smile on your face when tunes like Kicking Pigeons sees half the crowd swarm the stage.

In a time where ska is not so much the 'in' thing as it was a decade ago, it's commendable to see UK bands like [spunge] still attracting the masses to their shows - even now prices of gigs aren't as cheap as they used to be. It's an impressive feat.
